The North California (NorCal) team of 8 arrived on Saturday August 9th and stayed for one week to work on the completion of the Orchid building. The team leader, Jake Duckworth, a pastor in Palo Alto, California, is a graduate of SENDAS and a professor for the institution for video conference courses.
The team worked all week on various projects on the Orchid building which is a large, multipurpose room for meetings and other gatherings. They painted the outside of the building, and tiled in the two restrooms and on the main hall floor.
Through the partnership, the team understands the importance of this building and its link to theological education. Rev. Jake Duckworth commented, “We were inspired to see the fantastic work the seminary is doing to prepare our Spanish speaking leaders throughout the world. The creative ways they’ve found to keep the costs low for the students blows us away! Knowing that the facility rentals on the campus play an integral role in providing education for so many really helped our group to understand that our efforts had to do with so much more than brick and mortar!”
The team also helped at a children’s center which is run by a Nazarene family. The community of Copey has many needs and this center, with support from the Calle Blancos Church of the Nazarene, is working hard to provide a safe, educational environment for the children. The team painted the meeting and kitchen area and provided a new breaker for electricity. Rev. Duckworth comments, “It was special to see what a few loving hearts from a small church can do to minister to dozens of children in need. We were so glad we got to help this ministry in a small way!”
Part of the Work and Witness experience is enjoying the beauty of the country. The team loved their day trip which included a zip line tour and waterfall hiking.
At SENDAS, we are so pleased to have such a great partnership with such a great district. Already there are two teams from the NorCal district who plan to repeat the experience in Costa Rica next year.
Rev. Duckworth shares, “There’s something about that campus that just put us all at ease and helped us experience the presence of God. What a wonderful place, what a wonderful time! Thank you SENDAS!”
