This past December 8, 2017, our sister, missionary and profesor of SENDAS, Dorothy Bullon, completed the defense of her doctoral thesis at UNELA. With great precision and clarity she presented her thesis “Confronting Modern Slavery…A Study of Historical Church Cases and their Potential to Free Modern Slaves, Today in Costa Rica.”

She fielded questions from the examination committee, defending her thesis with solid, biblical, theological, and historical arguments.

Dr. Dorothy’s thesis contributes to Latin American theological thought moving it toward a practical theology with a Wesleyan focus.

We are proud of this achievement and for the fact that Nazarenes have a thinker on the level of our sister Dorothy. Dr. Bullon’s desire is to implement her transformational proposal in the local church to effectively free those living in modern slavery.

Dr. Dorothy’s thesis is in line with the theological vein of the early centuries of the Christian Church. Its message is eminently liberating, as Luke writes referring to Jesus’ ministry: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me….has sent me…to proclaim freedom for the captives and sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed…” (Luke 4:18-19).

We welcome Dr. Dorothy’s focus on the liberating message of Jesus Christ, in the context of the 21st Century, which confronts modern slavery and frees modern slaves in today’s Costa Rica, and in any part of our beloved Latin America.
