On May 23 and 24, 2019, in Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago, the Council of Regents of the Caribbean Nazarene College (CNC) met. The College’s President, Dr. Orlando Seale, invited SENDAS Administrative Vice-President, Rev. Mary Anáis Rojas, to present to the superintendents and lay delegates of the Caribbean Area the model used by SENDAS campus administration in Costa Rica, to generate local income.
SENDAS has organized its administrations in two departments: academic administration and campus administration in order to make them more effective and efficient in terms of their own income and expenses; but nevertheless, both belong to the same institution.
Dr. Dan Copp, Commissioner of Education for the Church of the Nazarene, contributed the funding for the Vice Chancellor of SENDAS travel to Trinidad to provide this training.
In sharing SENDAS as a case study, Rev. Rojas highlighted the significant increase in income experienced by SENDAS for tuition and fees in recent years. In 2009, these revenues represented 8% of the total academic funding, while in 2017 they reached 48% of the total income.
As for the administration of the campus, since 2003 the facilities stopped using resources from the WEF (World Evangelism Fund) and at the same time began to contribute to support the institution’s mission.
Rev. Anáis also highlighted some revenue sources for the campus administration: the International Center for Special Events, fixed and temporary rentals, sports courts and the heated pool among other services. It is worth mentioning that twenty years ago, Special Events alone collected an amount similar to what the institution received from the WEF. Today it raises three times as much. One of SENDAS’ medium-term goals is to be a fully self-sustaining institution.
The Board of Regents (CNC Board of Trustees) unanimously approved to adopt the system that SENDAS uses for its own administration. Our prayers are with Dr. Orlando Seale and his team so that God will give them wisdom and guide them in this new stage, leading them to greater achievements that magnify the name of Jesus throughout the Caribbean Area.
