The German protestant theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote:
“Christianity means community through Jesus Christ and in Jesus Christ…It means, first, that a Christian needs others because of Jesus Christ…..” (from Life Together, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1954)
The Certificate in Youth Ministry and the Bachelor of Theology with an emphasis in Youth Ministry programs are the result of a collaboration between SENDAS and the NYI Regional council for the purpose of equipping youth leaders on our Mesoamerica Region.
On April 17-28, 2018 in Tuxtla Gutierrez and Arriaga Chiapas, Mexico, the course “Community and Fellowship in Youth Groups” was taught. In both cities, Nazarene teenagers gathered who are committed to Youth Ministry in their different districts and local churches. Dr. Marco Velasco, Academic Dean of SENDAS led the course. Dr. Velasco said, “As a professor of SENDAS I was able to witness the passion that emanated from our young people. It was an important experience that made me realize how real the call of God is among our Nazarene youth. God calls and puts passion into their hearts. They are already an important part of the mission and leadership of our church, and they can reach new generations with the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
This course went deep into biblical principles and essential philosophies that will allow the youth leader to achieve effectively the work of communicating to adolescents the meaning of membership in the community of faith, the value of community, and the care Christians give one another. Included was the study of technique and tools to foster relationships between generations and among distinct age groups in the church.
The youth who participated were able to see the relevance of known biblical texts to deepen in them as the following expresses:
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Ps. 133:1); or “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Mt. 18:19).
At SENDAS, we pray for these youth impassioned for Christ, that they will conclude their preparation soon and continue serving faithfully in their congregations.
